Market research, finding your niche, and differentiating your community

When I first started working on Project Aftermath, I made the classic rookie mistake that kills most server projects before they even launch. I spent weeks obsessing over what other successful servers were doing, trying to figure out their “secret sauce” so I could recreate it. I analyzed their websites, watched their streamers, joined their Discord servers, and even played on a few to see what made them tick.

The problem? I was trying to copy their homework instead of understanding why their answers worked.

Here’s the thing about competition analysis in the server space — everyone’s doing it wrong. Most server owners look at the big names, see their player counts, and think “I need to do exactly what they’re doing.” They copy features, steal concepts, and wonder why their carbon-copy server sits empty while the original thrives. It’s like trying to replicate a recipe by looking at the finished dish — you might get close, but you’re missing all the crucial ingredients that made it special.
